Oh it's so sad how one location can be great and another a hot mess. So I love happy sumo, really, great when it's on, soooo bad when it's not, no happy medium. I have ordered the same roll, Maui Waui, at least 20 times at both Provo & Gateway locations. I ordered once here & it was completely different, basically all jalapeño & rice. Supposed to be a sweet roll with a hint of heat not a blazin roll with a pinch of sweet. I simply pulled the jalapeño out, whatever I can move past it and made a comment to the server that it was not made well when she asked. 10 min later she reappears to tell me she had the chef show her how it was made and he said it was perfect so I should just tell them I need a special order next time. Then walked off. Basically came to tell me I was wrong, for no reason, no apology no customer service, just nothing. So weird I guess that's what I get for giving them a second chance when the 1st time we came they told us we couldn't order anything with rice, because they were out.....a sushi place...out of rice....I should have known. Lol. Well last time at this location I guess. Too bad because it's so close to home :(

Didn't feel like cooking so I stopped by at 9pm on a Friday night with the family to take advantage of the VIP menu. It was not crowded and we were seated right away. We ordered some half price appetizers to start. Covered the basics with miso soup and edamame. Ordered the shrimp and veggie tempura. Their tempura is heavy and thick and some of the vegetables were sliced so big that they didn't really cook though. Then we tried the tuna tataki. For some bizarre reason it was coated in an old bay seasoning before searing. It ruined my meal actually. Old bay has no place in a sushi restaurant. It was served on a giant bed of fresh sautéed veggies. Took em home and threw them in a omelet for breakfast the next day. On the up side, the salmon sashimi was sweet and fresh. Also ordered the lollipop roll, which is refreshingly wrapped in cucumber and rice-less. My favorite! These items were not half price but well worth the full price. Half price dessert was three mochi ice cream balls. They had many items to choose from. Bottom line is... This place is hit or miss. Some items are not so great and others are wonderful. Choose carefully and you should be ok! Stay away from the heavy tempura and funky tataki!!

This Happy Sumo has become progressively worse over time. Tonight was the worst yet- starting with the dirty bar and the lack of plates or soy sauce bowls - which we had to rob from other spots. Ordered the Sushi Deluxe from Chad -the fish did not taste fresh, probably frozen prior- a d was served with little concern for presentation. Even the soy sauce tasted bad! We asked the chef to make us a roll of his creative choosing and we got a Mars roll, and not even a good one. Not going back.

Mediocre rolls and sashimi. Period. Staff was very friendly, I enjoyed them, but what I didn't enjoy was the awkward silence in the room due to the lack of music. Nothing worse than sitting in a restaurant and being able to hear the kitchen staff yucking it up in the back because the room is so quiet. I will never understand why some establishments cease to understand the importance of music and lighting... Turn up the music, turn down the lights and I will come back.

Okay service, okay sushi. We ordered hot rolls and they all came out cold. Service was dreadfully slow. We waited an hour for the rolls to come out. They were obviously understaffed. Food presentation was lacking tremendously. It was something I could put together on my own. Not sure if I would come back.

I was hoping 3rd time is the charm- just not great - decor is nice ( a bit bright lights) staff is friendly but not what you would call professional , and sushi is mediocre at best. And limited sushi bar display cases are 3/4 empty and what there is tired looking, not the show piece of uber freshness it should be Back to my other two sushi haunts every week

Lost two stars. Why? Well when most places increase the hours for summer, we were informed they close at 9:30 on weekends. Not a good sign. Rolled in at 9:05 on a Saturday. Server was good however the new manager went around shutting things down while we were dining on the patio. In the middle of our dinner we were informed it was last call even for dessert. We ordered dessert and it was out in five minutes. This bothered me because we weren't even done with dinner and I watched my ice cream melting with every minute pass. When I dine out, I like to take my time and not try to beat the clock to enjoy my dessert. We shoved our rolls so we weren't going to have milk soup for dessert. I understand you guys are trying to close but don't make your customers suffer. Sushi is good here but like other places, doused in sauces, They do have amazing crab cakes. I really liked this place but If we are paying good money, I dont want to be rushed thru my dinner, not worth it!

I stayed in a nearby hotel on business and this sushi place was within walking distance. I ordered the poke salad and a jazz (salmon, yellowtail, tuna) roll to go. The menu described the poke salad as being served on a bed of seaweed. I was choosing between the seaweed salad and the poke salad but decided on the poke because I expected to get some seaweed with it. I was sorely disappointed when the poke salad arrived on a bed of salad greens. This wasn't a really big deal and I wouldn't have bothered to write a review if this had been the only problem. After having some bites of the poke salad (I've had better but it was ok), I decided to try the jazz roll. The rice was a bit more chewy than I like, but the first few pieces were fine. However, with one piece, I found something really chewy in my mouth. I chewed on it a few times and finally spit it out onto my finger--it was a fish scale. Yuck. I thought maybe this was a one-time occurrence as I finished the rest of the food, but I found a second fish scale as I finished eating the roll. The staff also forgot to provide chopsticks and soy sauce with my order. I noticed the missing chopsticks but didn't notice the missing soy sauce until I got back to the hotel. I can't recall ever encountering a fish scale in a sushi roll before, even at the crappy all-you-can-eat sushi places I have been to. At least I didn't have diarrhea afterwards.

This is a great place to go and get sushi. They also have incredible crab cakes! There is a VIP night they do about 4 times a month where there appetizers and certain rolls are half off. I would recommend making reservations because wait times can be long on certain nights.

Love Happy Sumo! The Tetaki was perfect, the rolls delicious, and the staff insanely nice. It's been a while since I've been here, even better than I remember. I need to remember to come back more often.

I like this pace a lot good feel to it. Had a few rolls the other night here and must say I was impressed. Sushi in SLC is plenty but not done well many places but the Ole Happy Sumo came through with some great rolls.

Ordered take-out tonight - had the California roll and the lollipop roll, also the ahi tuna appetizer. Yuck, yuck, and yuck. The worst sushi I have ever had. The restaurant was NOT busy. I parked right at the front door, and from the time my order was confirmed to pick-up was 20 minutes. Will not be eating there any time soon.

Tonight was my first time here and I was SUPER impressed. I brought my son and the staff was very friendly and accommodating, they made us feel special. The food was great too! I had the rockstar roll and tuna nigiri- awesome. My son had a kids teriyaki chicken that came with so much food for $4.50 We will definitely be coming back to the happy sumo. Also the atmosphere was amazing! Love what they've done with the place.

We love the Happy Sumo in Cottonwood! The manager and staff are the best around! Stephanie (server) is always there working hard and is very helpful with the menu. She always remembers what we love to eat and drink. Holly (manager) always makes sure the guests are happy and is so innovative with making this restaurant the best it can be. Loran (head chef) is always willing to make special rolls the way you want them. I love his special cucumber rolls he makes upon request. We have never had a time the sushi was not fresh and delicious! The VIP is just and added bonus. I highly recommend The Happy Sumo!

We are regulars here. My family loves this place. Good service, good food - sushi and hot entrees. The best sushi in SLC? No. But squarely in the middle. Sushi roll combos are imaginative and they are happy to accommodate. Our favorite is the rock star Mia and Mars rolls. A wide variety of apps too. Also sign up for their vip email specials. They have a different special almost everyday - 2 for 1s - that amount to a great value!!

They should get 5 stars for service but only 3 for their food. It feels like their rolls are getting smaller and they are really skimping on the fish. Tsunami is much more bang for your buck and great sized rolls with slabs of fish on top.

Best place for a lunch break! I came in at 2:35 pm and even though they were closed and cleaning before their dinner shift they STILL seated me and made me an amazing sushi roll! The entire staff was very kind and considerate and kept me company throughout my meal. They made me feel comfortable even though I was there after hours. My personal sushi roll was made perfectly and I couldn't be more satisfied. 10 out of 10, would go again.

Great service! Great food! Love it! This location isn't as busy as the others so it is nice and quiet, plus fast service! The staff was super nice, from seating till the end! There rolls are great my favorite is the lollipop, which is wrapped in cucumber! Fresh rolls, great environment definitely recommending to friends!

Seems like the place for better since the new manager! Sushi is great. I think it's one of the best I've had... And being a Cajun, I'm usually one to have my food cooked! ;-)

We give The Happy Sumo in Cottonwood five stars because of the phenomenal service we received from Brandee tonight. She went above and beyond to take good care of my wife and I. She was very helpful and positive and we are glad they have such an excellent General Manager running things. Thank you!

Sorry, but this was one of the worst Japanese dinners I've had. The Rainbow Roll was bland and short on Rainbow, unlike many I've had. The Baja Roll was tasteless except for the hot sauce on top. The salad was the worst I've had at a Japanese restaurant and did not taste at all Asian. Overpriced for what you get and will not return.

The sushi at Happy Sumo is great! No complaints about the food, ever. I come to the cottonwood location about 3-4 time a month for lunch. Do not come here in a hurry or if you only have a 30 minute lunch break! They are chronically understaffed at lunch and so everything takes a while. Worth the wait if you have the time, though! (My hour lunch is plenty of time.)

Want something sweet? Try the Samuri roll. Want something spicy and a little tangy? Go with the Rock n Roll (roll?) I also liked the Mango Mamma. Leave the Vegas roll out this time. It's nothing special and I was bored of it. Also the entrees that other people in my group got were beautifully presented, colorful, and there was a good helping of food on their plate. Worth the money. Our service was great and I love the secluded booths and the general atmosphere. Thanks Happy Sumo!

Great food tonight. Thanks so much to Holly and Val for the hospitality! Seems like a little known secret in the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Please come enjoy. :-)

Happy sumo is a regular place for us to grab a bite to eat during the week. The staff is friendly and knowledgable with the menu. I personally love me some spicy rolls and they offer a good selection. The chefs never fail to whip up something fresh and new upon request too.

The food is good but the service is terrible. I went with a larger group of 15 people but we made a reservation in advance. We waited 45 minutes and then the food slowly trickled out 1 person at a time. Some of us were done eating 20 minutes before others got their food. It took us an hour and a half to get everything.

I'll begin by saying that I'm from the East Coast, I'm hesitant about eating fish in the middle of Utah. I'm also not a huge sushi fan. I guess it's grown on me over time, but I rarely eat it. We ordered a number of rolls, and it was absolutely delicious. Service was quick. Food was excellent. Ambient was quiet. I like this place.

Always amazing food. Sometimes a little slow with large groups of people but not bad. Their free VIP club has a lot of good 1/2 off deals all the time.

Food is a one star and the hostess that took my order was a five. Way too pricey for sushi I have made better at home. Small rolls and not much taste. I think this is why the bacon roll has a maple syrup sauce and our other two rolls had a ton of eel sauce and a sweet Siracha sauce. It really does have a nice atmosphere inside which makes this place so unfortunate because it has the right recipe for success. Unfortunately it isn't in the food.

Amazing! My mom and I are always looking for a close place to grab some food after work. This place has become our go to spot. We used to go to porcupine but its too loud and the foods gone down hill. Happy Sumo sets a very relaxing mood and the waiters spend quality time with you without being annoying. Lief has always taken amazing care of us and I recommend him and this place all in one.

Got a wonderful YELP note from the restaurant, catching the error in my bill. A truly nice gesture that reflects very well on their values. Nice job, Sumo! You earn the fifth star with that one!

Against my better judgment, gave this place a second chance. This time we ate in for lunch. -1 star for one of my biggest pet peeves - when a restaurant has a lunch menu but doesn't offer it. Gave the waitress benefit of the doubt, but noticed she did the same to the table next to us. -1 star for how long it took. It wasn't busy at all but 3 rolls and a noodle dish took over half an hour to come out. -1 star for the food. The rolls were OK, although the rice was a bit undercooked and crunchy. The yaki soba noodles looked good when they came out but tasted awful. Zero flavor, especially the beef which tasted like it was boiled plain and mixed in. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice.. well I learned my lesson and won't be coming back.

I usually always go to the one at Gateway but this time we went to this location. It was our anniversary and I was so excited to order my fave coconut crusted halibut. Imagine our surprise when the waitress not only tells us there is no halibut but proceeds to tell us the halibut "went bad" and could not be served. Ummmm, we ordered some rolls but all we could think about as we ate them was the "bad fish" rotting in the fridge. If the halibut went bad was there other fish that was bad? Were we being food poisoned as we sat there eating? I heard her telling other tables the same thing and the look on the other customers face was the same as mine! Now all I can think of when I think of Happy Sumo is bad fish. It will be awhile until we return and even then I'll go to Gateway! Happy Anniversay me!

We were so looking forward to eating here, especially after having eaten at the location at gateway location soooo many times. The food is not even close to the same. Don't waste your time or money, just take the trip downtown or try another sushi location. The dragon scales were a clumpy mess. The sushi rice was hard, which ruined the nigiri. The tempura vegetables were not fully cooked. It took our waitress about 15 mins to even take our drink order. We felt like we were eating at a hole in the wall. It's hard to believe this location is associated with the other. POOR FOOD QUALITY & SERVICE. Really, such a let down for spending $130.00. I will NEVER return.
